Empowering Through Equality: The Lyceum of the Philippines University’s Journey Towards Gender Equality and Women Empowerment (2021-2023)
The Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) is unwavering in its commitment to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal #5: Gender Equality. Recognizing gender equality as a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for a sustainable, peaceful, healthy, and productive society, LPU has undertaken various initiatives from 2021 to 2023 to empower women and girls, acknowledging their crucial roles in both local and international communities.
Highlights of LPU’s Gender Equality and Sustainability Initiatives:
1. Breast Cancer Awareness: A Lay Forum – October 27, 2023
In a collaborative effort between the Human Resource Department (HRD) and the Health Services Department, LPU conducted an online event to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Attended by academic support personnel, faculties, and regular employees, the “Breast Cancer Awareness: A Lay Forum” aimed not only to raise awareness about breast cancer but also to align with Sustainable Development Goal 5 (Gender Equality) and Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). Dr. Ai-Jen Russ O. Bautista’s empowering message, “LET’S BE AWARE: early detection, early management, and early discovery,” resonated with participants, emphasizing the importance of proactive wellness.
2. Orientation for Newly Hired Faculty Members – August 16, 2023
LPU prioritizes the integration of gender equity in its workforce. The HRD oriented newly hired faculty members, providing insights into the university’s vision, mission, and policies. Emphasis was placed on mandatory benefits, including maternity and paternity benefits, underscoring the commitment to gender equality, and addressing topics related to gender equity and sexual harassment.
3. Gender and Development Advocacy Activity: RA 9262 (Anti-Violence against Women and Children)—July 12, 2023
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 5, LPU Cavite conducted a hybrid seminar, #UsapangVAWC, enlightening participants about RA 9262. The event showcased the university’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence and promoting a safe environment for women and children.
4. Cavite Outstanding Woman of the Year Award – March 7, 2023
Recognizing exemplary women, LPU awarded the 2nd Cavite Outstanding Woman of the Year Award to Amb. Victoria Sisante Bataclan for her outstanding contributions to public service, reflecting the university’s commitment to celebrating empowered women.
5. Gender-Fair Language and Images in the Media – April 6, 2022
A joint effort of the Student Affairs Office and the Communication and Education Department, this event, led by Mr. Frederick P. Pablico, addressed the importance of gender-fair language and images in the media, fostering inclusivity and challenging stereotypes.
6. Breaking the Bias: A Lecture on Women’s Movement – March 22, 2022
In collaboration with the LPU Central Student Government and the Student Affairs Office, the webinar “Breaking the Bias” featured Dr. Marella Ada M. Bolanos, advancing the discourse on women’s movements and challenging societal biases.
7. #ProtectYourSpace: A Webinar on the Safe Spaces Act – August 19, 2021
The HRD led a webinar discussing the Safe Spaces Act of 2019, providing faculty members and academic support personnel with insights into Republic Act No. 11313, fostering a safer learning environment.
8. “Transgressing expectations, braving the Norm”: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression – June 18, 2022
A webinar exploring gender equality in the workplace, featuring speakers Atty. Jennette Robino and Mr. Benedict Alibasa, highlighted personal experiences and addressed topics related to gender identity, expression, and orientation.
9. Gender Bias and Discrimination: Barriers to Female Equality – March 10, 2021
Initiated by the Student Government, Ms. Tessa W. Mercado, a vlogger and media influencer, shared insights and experiences on gender equality, contributing to breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity.
LPU’s journey towards gender equality and women’s empowerment reflects a commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable academic community, aligning with global Sustainable Development Goals.
