LPU Cavite’s “Be Active” Campaign: Fostering Health and Well-being in Alignment with UN SDGs
In response to the World Health Organization’s call for increased physical activity to create a healthier world by 2030, Lyceum of the Philippines University—Cavite has taken proactive steps through its Center for Sports Development. The university launched “Let’s Rise, Lyceans! Rebuild resilience through sport and exercise,” a community sports and wellness program aimed at promoting the well-being of students, employees, and nearby communities. This initiative not only enhances physical fitness but also directly contributes to the achievement of several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a primary focus on SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
SDG Alignment:
The “Let’s Rise, Lyceans” program serves as a testament to LPU-C’s commitment to SDG 3, which advocates for good health and well-being for all. By encouraging physical activity and exercise, the university actively participates in the global mission to ensure healthier lives and promote well-being for individuals of all ages.
Campaign Activities:
Zumba Sessions for Employees: As part of the “Be Active” campaign, the core group of physical education teachers organized a series of Zumba fitness sessions for employees. These engaging sessions were conducted every Wednesday in June, specifically on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd, 2023, at the Mahogany Lobby, starting at 4:00 in the afternoon. By incorporating these sessions into the work routine, LPU-C fosters a culture of physical activity among its staff, contributing to both individual health and overall workplace well-being.
Pickleball and Volleyball Open Plays: The Center for Sports Development took a step further by allocating scheduled open plays in pickleball and volleyball. These open play sessions welcomed participation from students, employees, and members of nearby communities, providing free access to the university’s sports facilities. This initiative not only encourages physical activity but also promotes inclusivity, community engagement, and social interaction among participants.
Impact on SDGs:
The “Be Active” campaign directly aligns with SDG 3, emphasizing the importance of physical activity in achieving and maintaining good health. Additionally, by fostering a sense of community and inclusivity through sports and wellness programs, LPU-C contributes to SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, promoting the development of inclusive, safe, and resilient cities.
Moreover, the program reflects the university’s commitment to SDG 17—Partnerships for the Goals. By encouraging collaboration and community involvement in physical activities, LPU-C establishes partnerships that promote a shared vision of a healthier and more sustainable future.
Lyceum of the Philippines University—Cavite’s “Be Active” campaign not only promotes physical well-being but also actively contributes to the global agenda of sustainable development outlined by the United Nations. Through this initiative, the university plays a vital role in creating a healthier, more active, and socially connected community, aligning with the broader aspirations of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
