RESEARCH CAPABILITY BUILDING SERIES 1 - Research Statistics Seminar Workshop

In line with  the objective to strengthen the research capability of LPU-C ‘s faculty members and non-teaching personnel the university staged a Seminar-Workshop on Research Statistics last  June 17, 2016 (Friday), from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm at LPU-Cavite Computer Laboratory.

The invited Resource Person for the said event is the Head of the Statistics Center of the Lyceum of the Philippines University – Batangas Campus, Ms. Analie Pateña, her expertise on the said topic brought a huge impact to the participants. The said seminar workshop were attended by faculty member of various colleges of the university, Non-Teaching Personnel (NTP) also participated in the said event.

The said seminar workshop covers various topics on research statistics using SPSS software. Hands on training for every participants were conducted. Open forum on the topics were also staged. The SPSS topics covered in the said event includes the following:

  • Descriptive statistics: Cross tabulation, Frequencies, Descriptive, Explore, Descriptive Ratio Statistics
  • Bivariate statistics: Means, t-test, ANOVA, Correlation (bivariate, partial, distances), Nonparametric tests
  • Prediction for numerical outcomes: Linear regression
  • Prediction for identifying groups: Factor analysis, cluster analysis (two-step, K-means, hierarchical), Discriminant

SPSS is a widely used program for statistical analysis in social science. It is also used by market researchers, health researchers, survey companies, government, education researchers, marketing organizations, data miners and others. The original SPSS manual (Nie, Bent & Hull, 1970) has been described as one of "sociology's most influential books" for allowing ordinary researchers to do their own statistical analysis. In addition to statistical analysis, data management (case selection, file reshaping, creating derived data) and data documentation (a metadata dictionary was stored in the datafile) are features of the base software.

The said seminar workshop is part of the Research Program of LPU, a series of research capability activities are in stored for the entire school year.
