A New Hope: LPU Cavite Partners with the Bukid Kabataan Institution

For those either old enough to have seen the first movie of the Star Wars series (back in 1977) or are still young but are already fanatics of the three original movies of the series, the phrase ‘a new hope’ is both familiar and inspiring. Familiar, because A New Hope is the title of the first movie of the series, and inspiring, because the said title signifies a fresh start and a hope for a brighter future.

A new hope is what the Bukid Kabataan institution aims to provide for the more than sixty (60) children and teenagers under its care. The institution, being run by the sisters of the Religious of the Good Shepherd (RGS) and supported by various individuals and organizations, provides shelter, food, education, and many other needs for children and other young members of our society who became victims of various abuses. What is more tragic here is that most of the concerned abuses were committed against the children and teenagers by their very own family members and relatives.

It was indeed a blessing for both LPU Cavite and Bukid Kabataan that Mrs. Teresing Ferrer, mother of Congressman Luis Ferrer IV (6th District of Cavite) and Mayor Antonio Ferrer (General Trias, Cavite), shared with Ma’am Tess Pilapil, LPU Cavite’s Vice President for Administration/Registrar, information regarding the current situation and needs of the institution and the youth under its care. Mrs. Ferrer, a long-time benefactor of Bukid Kabataan, knew that LPU Cavite, with its vision of serving “God and country,” will be more than willing to become a partner of Bukid Kabataan in providing hope and love for the concerned children and teenagers.

The first demonstration of the partnership between LPU Cavite and Bukid Kabataan occurred on December 11, 2015 during the Christmas outreach program for the year. The program started with Bukid Kabataan’s musical play presentation at the University Auditorium. Members of the audience sang and danced with the young performers as they portrayed different scenes of the first Christmas. Employees and students alike praised the lively and humorous presentation and the talent-laden children and youth.

After the musical play, the guests and participants proceeded to the Phase II Lobby where the participating colleges, non-teaching departments, and student groups conducted games and gift-giving for the children.

As the program was drawing to a close, one can see the happiness and hope on the face of Sister Myra Atian, RGS, Administrator of Bukid Kabataan. She confided to the COSeL Head: “LPU is a great blessing for our children and youth.”

The truth is, LPU Cavite was also blessed that day by the angelic voices, contagious laughter, and deep love shared by Bukid Kabataan to everyone present that day.
