CITHM Attends “HELI/THE-ICE 2020/3- Fundamental Principles of Online Teaching and Learning”

The Higher Education Leadership Institute (HELI), together with the International Centre of Excellence in Tourism and Hospitality Education (THE-ICE) offered a topical and current webinar that touches on the “Fundamental Principles of Online Teaching and learning”. The College of International Tourism and Hospitality Management faculty members and hundreds of teachers from different countries attended the webinar headed by Dr. Steffen Zorn. Below are relevant subtopics introduced in the webinar.

Student Engagement in Online Classes

Dr. Steffen Zorn highlighted on online teaching and learning. The focal point was engaging first the students on online holding of classes. The speaker emphasized on engagement as the key word which requires the teacher great skill in building an attractive e-learning environment. By designing the session plan, the students will be attracted to participate, have fun, and be provided with interesting readings. “Let the students do” and “interactivity” are also valued keys to successfully facilitate online teaching.

Establishing Presence

The teacher should strive for presence – let the student be aware of their readiness to attend to their needs, introducing effective online pedagogy. Part of which is the emotional consideration where required activities from students are given due cognizance in assessment. it was advised by the speaker that the teacher should let the student know how they can improve in the next assessment to keep the students motivated to attend.

Systematic Presentation

Online teaching and learning per se requires the teacher to systematize, integrate techniques and exhibit technological fluency to encourage e-learning grounds. It is of utmost importance that there is coherence in laid down topics, helping the students understand lessons precisely from point to point.

Analytics Integration

Learning Analytics are part of the lecture: retention should be built-in but must be fully analyzed among students through the weighted combination of demographics, online engagement data (LMS activity) and prior grades. Knowing where you are at the moment gives you a better assessment of the students and prediction of possible opportunities.

Online facilitator should keep in mind that basic technology understanding and pedagogy expertise go hand-in-hand with successful online teaching and learning of the students.
