With speakers from Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) of Taiwan, the College of Engineering, Computer Studies, and Architecture (COECSA) conducted the first of its International Lecture Series for Civil Engineering students held virtually last October 17, 2020, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Coping up with changes and innovations in the field of Civil Engineering, specifically in Geotechnical and Structural Engineering, was the main topic discussed in the webinar, spearheaded by two invited speakers, namely, Engr. Ta-Chen LI and Engr. Anjerick Topacio who are both PhD students in CYCU.

As an experienced Structural Engineer in Taiwan, Engr. Li discussed the first topic entitled, “Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Innovations.” He presented Taiwan’s advanced construction methods for both horizontal and vertical structures such as Xueshan Tunnel and Taipei 101. Furthermore, he emphasized the significance of structural health monitoring for engineering structures can be damaged due to environmental, operational and human-indeed factors.

As a Research Assistant in CYCU who conducts research studies related to Geotechnical Engineering, Engr. Topacio, the second speaker, shared his experiences in “Advanced Research Topics of the Future.” He presented various research ideas that can be done to cope up with the advancing field of Civil Engineering.

This webinar was attended by 140 participants composed of third year, fourth year, and Fifth Year students, recent graduates, and COECSA faculty members.

“As a future civil engineer, we must able to adapt to the technological phase that is happening and develop more techniques and methods to be able to be more useful and have more advantage in the future,” a student commented upon evaluating the recently concluded webinar.

Moreover, International Lecture Series for other Engineering and Architecture programs are currently being plan by the College.
