Introduction to College of Law

The Lyceum of the Philippines University College of Law is committed to the principle of academic excellence, academic freedom, and nationalism.

Its general objective is to produce ethical lawyers who are assets to the legal community and will serve the nation and the Filipino people.

It offers a four-year program leading to the degree Bachelor of Laws (Ll.B). In its Cavite campus, classes are held from Mondays to Saturdays between four o’clock in the afternoon to nine o’clock in the evening.

Our professors generally use the Socratic method, that is, by question and answer accompanied by discussion of codal provisions or decided cases. This is calculated to develop the analytical skills of the students, to engender a healthy skepticism of settled conclusions, rules and dogmas, and to improve the oral communication skills of students. In procedure subjects, however, a clinical method is preferred so that the students are exposed to the realities of the practice of law.

History

The Lyceum of the Philippines University College of Law opened its doors in 1952 with Senator Claro M. Recto and Senator Ambrocio Padilla as its first Dean and Vice-Dean, respectively and has committed to become a law school that emphasized and upheld national morale and character.

During its inception, the College of Law’s faculty was composed of Sent. Pedro Sabido (Remedial Law and Mercantile Law); Sen. Padilla (Civil Law and Criminal Law), Former President and LPU founder Jose P. Laurel (Political and International Law).

With the exceptional caliber of its faculty and the training and expertise it provided its students, the College of Law rose in the field of legal education.

 In 2003, it was transferred from its original home in Intramuros to Makati and its main campus is presently housed in a seven story building at the corner of Rufino and Leviste streets in Salcedo village. In 2013, it opened its Cavite Campus, which produced its first ever graduate in 2017.

Through the decades, LPU College of Law’s bar record has not failed. It produced its first top-notcher in the 1956 bar exams in the person of Artemio Corpuz (5^th place).

Presently, and under the tutelage of Dean Maria Soledad Deriquito-Mawis, the LPU College of Law continues to move forward advancing Dr. Laurel’s philosophy and values : Veritas et Fortitudo (truth and fortitude) and Pro Deo et Patria (For God and Country).

Admission

1. An applicant must be a graduate of any Bachelor’s degree and must have earned at least eighteen (18) units of English, eighteen units of Social Sciences (including Rizal), and six (6) units of Mathematics.
2. An applicant must submit the following documentary requirements:
   • Certificate of Grade
   • Certificate of good moral character
   • Transcript of Records with Special Order (S.O.) number or its equivalent for a baccalaureate degree, with remarks “Copy for Lyceum of the Philippines University” or “For further studies”
   • Birth Certificate duly authenticated by the Philippine Statistics Authority
   • Two (2) pieces 2×2 colored ID pictures
3. A transferee must submit letters a-e above, when applicable, and the following documentary requirements:
   • Certified true copy of grades
   • Honorable dismissal
   • Certificate of Eligibility to take up Law from the previous school attended (Form C-1)
4. Honor graduates and LPU alumni are entitled to discounts

Retention Policy

1. Delinquent status
   A student who has failed two (2) subjects in any particular semester but has not failed the same subject twice shall be placed on Delinquent status and may take prescribed full load in the succeeding semester. He must pass at least 75% of the enrolled units, including dropped subjects, to revert to good standing. Failing in which, he shall be honorably discharged.
2. Two – flunk rule
   A student who fails the same subject twice will not be re-admitted.
3. Three – flunk rule
   A student who fails three (3) subjects in the same semester will not be re-admitted.
4. Five – flunk rule
   A student who fails five (5) subjects in the course of his stay in the College of Law will not be re-admitted.

2. Academic Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to students who qualify to the program based on his performance in the immediately preceding semester, which may be full (free tuition fee) or partial (50% discount on tuition fee):

1. At least 15 units enrolled per semester
2. At least a 175 grade point average, no subjects dropped or failed
3. Did not commit any infraction as defined in the student handbook
4. National and International Competition Champion
